About Bowen University
The significant establishment of what has moved toward becoming Bowen University today was laid in 1854 by the group of the late Reverend Thomas Jefferson Bowen who began a school in Ijaiye Orile in the present Oyo State of Nigeria. The school, which included five stewards of the late Bowens, five different workers, and a couple of others attracted to the fledging school by sheer interest, has developed from this small start into a great many Baptist essential and optional schools scattered the nation over today. By 1960, there was a Baptist school wherever a Baptist assemblage exits.
Establishing a Baptist University in Nigeria was first imagined in 1938. This was a result of the Baptist sense of duty regarding helping individuals to build up their possibilities minus all potential limitations. The primary intense advance towards completing this vision was taken in 1956 when a proposition was exhibited to the meeting of the Baptist Mission held in Eku from 11 to 14 December, 1956. On 16 and 17 July, 1957, the joint meeting of the Executive Committees of the Baptist Mission of Nigeria and the Nigerian Baptist Convention worked energetically, submitting time, material and HR to completing the vision.
Today, every one of these endeavors have solidified into the foundation of Bowen University, a huge point of interest in the scholarly legacy of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, making it the primary Baptist University in Africa.
On 17 July, 2001, the Federal Government of Nigeria affirmed the foundation of Bowen University and it was in this manner authorized to work by the National Universities Commission. A Provisional Governing Council to deal with the University was initiated on 22 August, 2001 with late Professor J.T. Okedara as the establishment Vice Chancellor, while Mr E. A. Lawale was named as the pioneer Registrar. Teacher Okedara filled in as Vice Chancellor until July 2003. In August 2003, the officeholder Vice Chancellor, Professor Timothy Oyebade Olagbemiro, was named Vice Chancellor and is planned to finish a ten-year residency of two terms in July 2013.
